Shotmaker is golf played with one finger. If something is not working, or you have an idea, write to us at info@toayen.co.uk. Tell us your iPhone model and what happened, and we will reply.
How do I swing?
Touch the screen below the ball, draw your finger down for the backswing, then swipe up through the ball and keep going. How far back you go, and how fast and smoothly you come through, decide the distance; the ladder on the screen shows roughly how far each length of backswing sends the ball with the club in hand.
Why do my shots go left or right?
The line your finger takes up through the ball decides where the ball starts and how it curves. The lessons "The straight shot", "The fade" and "The draw" show you how to hit each one on purpose. Left-handed players can choose their hand in Settings.
What were the warm-up swings at the start?
When you first play, five warm-up swings on the tee teach the game how your own finger swings, so a smooth swing of yours goes straight. You can calibrate again at any time in Settings, with ten swings on the range.
Does the caddie play the shot for me?
No. The caddie reads the hole and suggests a club and a line for the way you play. The shot is always yours.
What is a handicap round?
A round on a full course that counts towards your Shotmaker handicap. It is played in the course's own fixed conditions, the same for every player, and Settings cannot change it. Practice rounds and single holes use your own settings and do not count.
Is a Shotmaker handicap an official handicap?
No. It measures how well you play Shotmaker, and only that.
How do I play with friends?
Sign in to Game Center (Settings, Online), then open Matches on the home screen and choose Set up a match: the course, nine or eighteen holes, stroke play or match play, one, two or four rounds, and how many days it stays open. Invite Game Center friends, or send the link or code to anyone. Each player plays their rounds in their own time before the match closes, on exactly the same course, pins and wind.
A friend sent me a code. How do I join?
Open Matches, choose Join with a code, and type the eight letters and numbers. If they sent a link, tapping it opens the match in Shotmaker.
What is the weekly tournament?
Four rounds on one course each week, free for everyone with Game Center. Rounds one and two are played on Thursday and Friday, rounds three and four on Saturday and Sunday, with a cut after round two in each handicap band. It never counts towards your handicap, and you can play its course without the Club. Once a season one week's tournament is a major, such as The Winter Championship.
What are ranking points?
Every weekly tournament gives ranking points to those who make the cut and finish all four rounds, more the higher you finish, and a major gives twice as many. Points count in full for three months, then fade over the rest of the year. Open Ranking on the home screen to see where you stand.
What is the daily challenge?
One hole a day, the same for everyone. Practise it as often as you like, then play the one attempt that counts. Your best eighteen days in a month add up, and the top three of each month win a trophy for the cabinet.
Why is my score not on the board yet?
Rounds are sent when you are online and signed in to Game Center. If you finished a round without a connection, it waits on your phone and goes when you are next online. Settings, Online shows any rounds waiting.
How do I stop the notifications?
Turn off reminders in Shotmaker's Settings. Our server then forgets your phone's notification address.
How do I delete what your server holds about me?
Settings, Online, Delete my online data. It removes your rounds, places and matches from our server. Your rounds on your phone stay.
Where are my rounds kept?
On your phone. If iCloud Drive is on, Shotmaker also keeps its own copy in your iCloud, and a new phone offers to take it back. If you play online, your finished rounds are also sent to our server for the boards; our privacy policy says for how long.
I have a new phone. How do I get my rounds back?
Open Shotmaker on the new phone with the same iCloud account, and it offers to take back its copy from iCloud. If you play online, Settings, Online, Restore my rounds also brings back your finished rounds of the last year from our server.
I left a round part way. Can I finish it?
Yes. Choose Resume on the home screen to take it up where you left it.
Does Shotmaker need the internet?
Not to play on your own. Matches, the weekly tournament, the daily challenge, the ranking, the leaderboards, and buying or restoring a purchase need a connection.
What is free?
Larchmere and Dunmarra Links, for ever. The Club opens every other course and each new one as it arrives. You can also buy a single course and keep it.
I bought something but the course is still locked.
Open the Club page from the home screen and choose Restore purchases, signed in with the Apple Account you bought with.
How do I cancel the Club?
In your iPhone's Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Shotmaker. Cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the period to stop the next renewal. The Club stays open until the end of the period you have paid for.
How do I ask for a refund?
Purchases are made through Apple, who handle refunds: go to https://reportaproblem.apple.com and choose the purchase.
